—During sleep, our brains do a lot of spring cleaning that includes something called “pruning” which gets rid of weak neural pathways for stuff that you don’t regularly do or need to remember. This is to make space for neural pathways that carry signals for the information and habits that you require more often.
While we leave the brain to do this during our unconscious time in dreamland, we need to make time during our conscious waking hours to evaluate and reflect on the days events and use the conclusions to plan for tomorrow – but we can only do this without distractions.
Many moons ago, a distraction would be a predator trying to figure out the best way to swallow you but today a distraction would be social media, TV, Games or other people.
Humans belong in a group known as “social animals” which is why social media is so addicting – but as with many addicting substances, social media is just a modern day predator that also has the ability to swallow and digest you over a thousand years like the Sarlacc Pit.
Reflection is a reminder for us to place importance in taking solitude time to think and reflect. There is much you can gain from just 5 minutes of reflecting which can make a difference to the trajectory of your life. 5 minutes on social media however can be enough to plant seeds for you to ruminate over for the next few days – this not only wastes more of your time but adds absolutely no value to your life at all – and to top that off research shows that ruminating is unhealthy for you.
Spending time to reflect is key in creating a successful career – after all, it’s the steps that you have taken that will get you to where you want but you need to look back to recalibrate your direction.
